That year, this day

Yesterday morning, a friend of mine, woke up at 9 after ignoring the two previous alarms. This was his usual routine ever since Euro 2012 kicked-off. While struggling to open his eyes wide, he heard someone keeping a coffee mug on the table. That’s it; he said to himself, it’s the final wake-up call. (BTW, I started hating the term “WAKE-UP CALL” after the international tour) So, rubbing his eyes, he headed towards the washroom which  was already occupied. Too lazy to head towards the other washroom downstairs he returned to his room and switched his laptop on. While the computer was loading, he took a few sips of his coffee, saying to himself,”Sher bhi kabhie brush karta hai?”at the same time not realizing that,” Sher kabhi coffee bhi nahi peeta.” By the time he went through four notifications on facebook, the coffee had done its job. He rushed to the washroom which luckily was unoccupied this time. As he was getting late for his office (read Summer Internship) he came out running to switch his lappy off. But as he was doing that, for the third time in 12 years of his computer usage, the clock at the right bottom corner caught his attention. Let’s leave the first two occasions for some other day and concentrate on the third one. The date read 19.06.2012. It occurred to him, that it’s exactly a year now. It was the same day, last year; he shifted to the XIME hostel. He started recalling everything he had been through in this year, so much that he lost track of time. By the time he realized, it was 10:30. And even with his express pace (i.e. getting dry-clean ready, having cereals for break-fast and driving at 140kmph) it would have taken another 45 minutes more. As soon he reached the figure “1 hour 15 minutes late” while calculating, he decided against going to the office and started penning down what he remembered all this while. This is what his diary has to say.

Dear Diary,

Today, I have completed one year in XIME and I must say what an year it has been. However, in the beginning I was terribly disappointed by the college. My idea of a B-School was a 20 acre campus, night canteen where people have a maggi or two while working on their assignments, interactive classes, management fests and liberty of all sorts, which BTW,  was not wrong by any means. A typical B-school in the country, be it from the ivy league like IIM-A,B,C,L,I , XLRI ,FMS , MDI or from tier two like SIBM , MICA , IMT or even from tier 4 like Amity, Bimtech, IILM,  etc. has these salient features. For the first few days in XIME, I was in a state of shock. A 4 acre campus, girl’s in time 9 p.m, class seating arrangement roll no. wise, no management fests, no participation in other college’s management fests gave nightmares to me. After watching Prison Break, I used to wonder how I will feel being inside a prison and Presto!!! GOD sent me to one. It took me some time to realize that you don’t need a state of the art  infrastructure or a set of very lenient rules to have fun, all you need is a good bunch of friends. This is one area where XIME is extremely rich. Where else would you get to live with people from 21 states of the country, play football and basketball with the Americans , going to gym with the Frenchs, having breakfast with Italians and praying with the Russians ( very few will get this one :P)in a tier 2 /3 college. There is so much to learn from each one of them. I learnt that all South Indians don’t use coconut oil for cooking, just Mallus do that and that Punjabis don’t eat chhola bhatura everyday. It’s not just diversity but the talent of the batch which amazed me. For the first month I was in a state of awe, almost everyone was better than me in everything. Performing arts, studies, sports, philanthropy, you name it and these guys can do it, not just do it , do it like a pro. It is them who make your trips to Skandagiri and Wonder La a memorable one, who make you ride 60kms in the night for a cup of coffee. Sometimes I imagine how dull my international trip would have been without them. It is these friendships which make it so very entertaining to sit at the same spot everyday throughout the year. While most of my batchmates are my friends there are still 10 whom I just can’t stand. But then what’s a college life without rivalry. Playing XPL , Xoccer Liga without rivalry would have been a tad bit boring.  In this one year I have had experiences which I will remember for the lifetime. The good part is we still have around 10 months left in this program. And with newly developed, not so subtle changes in college administration and management, we can start afresh. We can negotiate again on the timing of placement week, Fresher’s party, Farewell party, Management fest participation policy, Conducting Management fests, Celebration of festivals of each culture and religion(like the dandiya night which was a tradition in XIME a few years back), Night- canteen and a unisex one at that, Girl’s in-time etc. Just imagine, if we managed to have all this fun with restrictions how much more fun we will have without them. Chances are we will hear a “NO” instead of a “NO-NO-NO-NO-NO”, but it’s still worth a try. We will leave no stone unturned to make this year an ever better one.

Diary, I just can’t tell you how much I am missing my college and how eagerly I am waiting for the 9th of july. BTW, I am so sorry I won’t come to you for a week as unknowingly I have filled the space till 24-06-2012 , today itself. I hope you will understand, I get a bit nostalgic when it comes to college. See you on Monday, till then take care.

So guys, these were the pages from his diary which he wrote yesterday. FYI, this guy is not me, har baar mai hi hounga kya? And gee I don’t write a diary.
A very Happy Anniversary to all my batch mates and thanks for being there. Friends or foes, my life would not have been as rocking without you.
Cheers

God Bless

A not so eloquent speech, this

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SPEECH: This is speech was given by a glossophobic person in front of the President just one day before the mid-term. The speaker had the reputation of screwing up each and every presentation.

Here it goes,

Friends, Indians, Countrymen, lend me your ears.

Before I begin my speech, I want to tell you guys that there are three interesting facts about this speech. But, I will come back to them later.

There are not many things an average person like me can talk about. I have been an average student all my life. I was average throughout my school, my engineering and here too I am working my way towards being average. This speech made me think, Why I am average?

I grasp concepts quite fast, I have a decent memory and I am not very bad at writing either. I am not bragging about my intellectual prowess here, but these are the things told to me by different teachers who have taught me over the years. After a few hours of introspection, I stumbled upon the reason. The reason was, I don’t study. As simple as that. So, the million dollar question is why don’t I study? Why am I such a waste of talent? No, the answer is not that I am lazy, well partly it is. But more prominent reasons are my priorities and belief system.

Studies have always been at the very bottom of my priorities. Ironically, the thing featuring at the top, if not the top most is LEARNING. I have always believed that learning through experience is the best form of learning. Most of the MBA colleges today recognizes the importance of learning through experience. Perhaps that is the reason why they offer residential programmes.

Let me prove how learning through experience is the best form of learning. Let us take, “Learning through experience is the best form of learning” as our null hypothesis and “ Learning through books is the best form of learning” as alternative hypothesis.

Long before I studied Power and Politics in OB, I had a real life experience with it. In my school, the sports teacher used to select the Captain for the football team and then the Captain used to select his team.  By using Politics I became the Captain of the football team. And then I exercised my Powers. I certainly know how, Power and Politics work even though I may not be able to give you exact definition given in Robbins. The topper in OB might know the exact definition but when it comes to coping with it, he/she might have a tough time. Generally, the toppers are the people who try to remain away from Politics. I am generalizing here, but take it as an assumption to support my hypothesis. So, these are the people who inspite of delivering results at the workplace don’t get enough recognition. Hence, we can say that learning through experience is the best form of learning. In my four years of Electrical Engineering, I have learnt this approach. I still don’t know, How an Induction motor starts
.

Most of us here are so much particular about our marks that we loose sight of our primary objective which is learning. They think that these are the years we should give their best and enjoy life afterwards. But, it never happens that way. Mr. Rahul Saxena is the CEO of a very big MNC. He is by far the most successful person I know personally, he is a distant cousin of mine. He always say to me that these are the best years of your life , enjoy it to the core. Maintain the minimum required marks and enjoy the rest of the time.

The Dalai Lama was once asked what surprises him most about humanity. He replied, MAN. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or future; he lives as if he is never going to die and then dies having never really lived.

So what we learn from it? Live in the present. Celebrate life. Take some time out to do things you love. Most of us think its too late. Why waster time doing a thing in which we can’t make a career in. Well, it’s not that late. The likes of John Abraham and K.K Menon became actors after their MBA. Gaurav Dagaonkar became a singer after passing out from IIM-A. And even if you can’t make a career out of your passion , never stop doing it because it makes you happy. Or shall I say in OB language, it is intrinsically rewarding.

Remember, at the beginning of the speech I said there are three interesting facts about this speech.
First is, I have deliberately exceeded my time limit. As I have stage fear, I wanted to spend more time in front of the President. Learning through experience, you see.

Second is, the speech is quite controversial. More so, because it is being presented before the President.

And the third interesting fact is that I have made up a few things in order to emphasize my points. For instance, I was never the captain of my school football team AND Mr. Rahul Saxena does not exist. Infact his name is the combination of the names of two of my very good friends, Rahul Singh and Kushagra Saxena.

Hope you guys had a good time.

Thank You

God Bless.

The week that wasn't (there)

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt. - Charles M Schulz.

Valentine’s Day , the festival of love is almost a week away. And as I am a very lovable person, I thought I should share my views on it. Also it’s my very first Valentine’s Day here.

Statuary Warning: This post is not about the bliss, love, affection or the public display of it associated with the day, but about its hard reality. So all you heart patients (figurative) out there, please keep out.

If you trace back the history of Valentine’s Day, you will get different stories. It has been celebrated for ages but never in the way it is being celebrated  for the last 15-20 years. If I am not wrong, in India, it all started with SRK starer Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). Before that, the day was unheard of. So, why the Valentine’s Day celebration gained momentum in the last two decades or so? I will come to that later. First, I should get to the significance of the day.

It’s a day on which a not so popular girl in the final year of college awaits a proposal from a guy who kept staring at her throughout the college but never really talked to her. It’s a landmark day before which every single wants to jump into a relationship and it’s a day on which each and every person who is a part of  a couple, flaunts his/her social acceptance.

For the city I hail from, it’s just a risky outing. With a possible risk of getting married the same day (read Moral Police), only the brave-hearts dare to step out which otherwise is a breezy, lovely afternoon. With the ascent of anti-moral policing movement it has got even riskier. It’s a curse in disguise. The main exponent of this movement is a Women Organization. They make sure that you are unharmed by the moral-police during your outing with your partner. But but but – it’s a women’s organization. There is fair chance that one of the members is your distant relative or an aunty from the neighbourhood. So you can go out that day, alright, but possibly never again.

So, coming back to the original question. Why the celebrations gained momentum in the last two decades? Well, the answer is simple and obvious. It’s a marketing gimmick, probably a blue ocean one, where new markets were created.  On V-day, gift and card manufacturing firms, chocolate companies etc. can increase their sales by ten folds and more which otherwise was a pretty ordinary day. Imagine we can get away with normal mobile phone tariff on our National Festivals but special tariff is charged on the Valentine’s Day. These days even the political parties are leveraging the popularity of the day (Ambush Marketing). It’s so successful a strategy that for past 5 years or so it has been extended to form what we call a Valentine’s week.

Day 1: Rose Day
Both guy and girl are happy on this day. Girl for receiving a rose and guy because he got through the date merely in ten bucks.

Day 2: Propose Day
This day girl is never happy. She always wants her bf to propose her in the most innovative way possible, and it never happen in real life.

Day 3: Chocolate Day
This day girl is very happy and boy is secretly happy. He knows that half the chocolate he buys for her will come back to him.

Day 4: Teddy Day
This day takes a toll on a guy’s pocket. Girls are elated as their fixation to teddies is well known to the world.

Day 5: Promise Day
A dreadful day for the guys as most of them, 99.84 % to be precise are commitment phobic.

Day 6: Hug Day & Day 7: Kiss Day
The pappi-jhappi days, as I call it. These days are usually used by newly formed couples to escalate bases.

Before I met my husband, I'd never fallen in love. I'd stepped in it a few times. – Rita Rudner

Keep loving, all 365 days a year (366 for this particular one) not just on one particular day or a week.

God Bless :)
